China Sourcing Guide
The 7 mistakes, in short
These are the same mistakes we see importers and brand founders make over and over when sourcing from China without someone on the ground. The free guide above goes deeper on each one — here's the short version.
MISTAKE 01
Trusting the supplier who replies fastest
A quick reply on Alibaba or 1688 tells you nothing about factory capacity, quality standards, or whether you're even talking to a real manufacturer. Speed of response is a sales skill, not a sourcing qualification.
MISTAKE 02
Skipping a physical factory visit
Photos and video calls can be staged. The only way to know a factory can actually produce your order — on spec, on time — is to have someone walk the floor in person before you commit.
MISTAKE 03
Trading company vs. real factory
Plenty of "factories" on sourcing platforms are trading companies subcontracting to a manufacturer you'll never see. That extra layer means less control over quality, timelines, and price.
MISTAKE 04
Paying full deposit before verifying production capacity
A large deposit with no visibility into whether the factory has the machinery, staff, or raw-material access to actually run your order is how importers lose money before a single unit ships.
MISTAKE 05
Leaving quality control until the goods are already packed
By the time a shipment is boxed and on the truck, it's too late to fix a defect rate. Inspection needs to happen during production and again pre-shipment — not as an afterthought.
MISTAKE 06
Negotiating unit price without understanding landed cost
A lower factory price means nothing if freight, duties, and rework from poor quality eat the margin later. Real negotiation accounts for the full cost of getting goods to your door.
MISTAKE 07
Splitting sourcing, QC, and freight across three vendors
Every handoff between a sourcing agent, an inspection company, and a freight forwarder is a place where accountability disappears the moment something goes wrong. One team, one point of contact, is worth more than the cheapest quote at each stage.
